The Joelma fire was a tragic incident that took place on February 1, 1974, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Joelma building, a 25-story office complex, caught fire and claimed the lives of 189 people.
The fire started on the 12th floor of the building and spread quickly due to the lack of fire safety measures. The building had no sprinklers, smoke detectors, or fire alarms. The fire also spread through the air conditioning ducts, further accelerating its spread.
Many people were trapped in the building and died due to suffocation, while others jumped to their deaths to avoid the flames. A few survivors were rescued by helicopters from the roof of the building.
The cause of the fire was attributed to faulty wiring in the building, which had been noticed by the maintenance staff but was not acted upon.
The Joelma fire is considered one of the deadliest fires in history and led to significant reforms in fire safety regulations in Brazil.
